Finland, who never reached top 5 before Lordi, got to host the contest in Helsinki. Host Broadcaster ule adopted True Fantasy as the slogan for this year’s contest. The high-tech stage was constructed in the shape of a kantele, a traditional Finnish instrument.
The Czech Republic and Georgia debuted in the Semi-Final, so did Serbia and Montenegro as independent states. Hungary returned to the contest after a year of absence.
A record number of 28 countries took place in the Semi-Final. From 2004 to 2007, only one semi-final took place. Both in 2005 and in 2007 there were more countries participating in the Semi-Final then in the Grand Final. After the contest in Helsinki it was decided to organise 2 Semi-Finals per contest, which was implemented in 2008.
The show was hosted by Jaana & Miko, who were voted best hosts of the 2000s by you in our poll last year!
The contest was won by Marija Šerifović from Serbia. With her song Molitva she brought the contest to Belgrade in 2008. Serebro reached third place for Russia, while Ukraine came second with Verka Serduchka and her Dancing Lasha Tumbai
