Wrap-up: Soraya almost 'took the night'

19 June 2009 at 11:22 CEST

Who is Soraya?

Soraya was born in Valencia de Alcántara, in the Spanish region of Extremadura, on the 13th of September, 1982. Her career as an artist started in 2005, after she had become the most popular finalist of the TV-programme Operación Triunfo. Since then, Soraya’s record trajectory has been meteoric, with four albums made.

"I think Soraya can do it very well, this song has a lot of rhythm and it's very visual," a comment from her homeland said. A fan from this year's Host Country - Russia - commented:"It's one of the best entries this year!"

Spain was already pre-qualified for the Final but gathered a total of 23 points in the end and also finished at the same place together with Lithuania. This meant the first and the last performed songs took the same spots. Both of their names also started with the letter 'S'. Magic of the Eurovision Song Contest?

Spain's selection process kicked off at the end of 2008 where an open invitation through website MySpace asked for song submissions. Following that, 30 songs were selected to compete over three semi-finals. Two semi-finals were already completed and in a marathon show in the evening of the 1st of March, the third and last semi-final took place. Three songs qualified to the final directly and a fourth progressed to the second chance round. After the last semi-final, it was announced that the songs which finished in fourth place in the three semi-finals would also take a place in the final.
