Wrap-up: maNga close to another European trophy

10 June 2010 at 11:01 CEST

Who are they?

maNga’s story began when Yağmur Sarıgül “Yamyam” (Guitar) separated his ways with the cover band he played with at local bars. His plan for his new band was to combine rock music and electronic music bringing hard guitar riffs and rap vocals together. The band began playing “nu metal” and “hard rock” songs. As a result the band was named maNga after the traditional Japanese cartoon art, bringing five different characters, five different music styles and five different world views together.

From 2001 onwards, the band released several highly successful albums which all became top sellers in their native country of Turkey.

maNga won the Best European Act award at the MTV European Music Awards in November 2009. That was not the only award the band won in 2009 though, maNga has taken numerous other awards as well, including for the best video, the best band, the best song, the best album and the best performance.!

What the fans thought?

"Manga is a fantastic choice for Turkey. I went to one of their shows while I was in Turkey a month ago and their live performance was incredible. Also, they are diverse in their music - their most recent album shows that they can successfully incorporate rock music with various other genres. I am sure they will create something original and authentic." said a fan from Australia.

"Wish that this rock group will finish in a good place just like in MTV ranking!" said another supporter from Sweden.

And were they right, maNga was very close to securing another European trophy for themselves with their memorable performance in Oslo. They finished second in the Final of the Eurovision Song Contest with 170 points and winning the second Semi-Final, held two nights before.
