Welcome home, Conchita!

15 May 2014 at 22:09 CEST

Before 2014, Austria had won the Eurovision Song Contest only one single time, in 1966 with Udo Jürgens and his ballad Merci Chérie. So you can imagine the enthusiasm that Conchita Wurst's victory last weekend caused in her home country!

When Conchita arrived back at Vienna airport last Sunday, thousands of fans and more than a hundred journalists were already awaiting her inside the terminal. They waved flags and banners celebrating the victory, they sang for her, or they just wanted to catch a glimpse of the most recent Eurovision winner together with the trophy.

After enjoying this moment with her most loyal fans, Conchita Wurst, together with a delegation of the Austrian public broadcaster ORF, went to an adjacent hotel to hold a press conference. You can watch still watch it on the ORF website (in German language).

But this is not the end of the celebrations by far: On May 18, she will meet the Austrian Federal Chancellor, Werner Faymann, and Minister of Arts and Culture, Josef Ostermayer, at an official reception. After that, she will perform her winning song Rise Like A Phoenix live on stage at Vienna's Ballhausplatz, so that her fans can enjoy the moment together with her. The show will be broadcast live on ORF 2 and via webcast at 17:10 CET, presented by Andi Knoll and Kati Bellowitsch.
