Young Georgian Lolitaz - The Mainstream of Avant-garde

(by Elene Margvelashvili, Communicator, GPB)

Mainstream of Avant-garde, that's how Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz characterize their own music, which will not leave even the most critical lovers of music indifferent. We can say with assurance that the group YGL is one of the most distinctive and contemporary representatives of Georgian culture. The musicians filtered the post-Soviet reality and transformed their personal experience into an avant-garde wave - in international indie, electronic, alternative rock music. The Beatles, Nirvana, Beck, Radiohead, Vladimir Nabokov - all served as sources of inspiration for Young Georgian Lolitaz. The band passed through a years-long phase when their music was influenced and formed its own uncompromising style. Today Young Georgian Lolitaz is a brand on the Georgian stage.

Representatives of all generations are listeners to their musical journey. After 15 years of establishment, YGL remains being the most outstanding and demanded band with its melodic songs, refined texts and energetic live performance.

The Eurovision Song Contest is the next trip - Young Georgian Lolitaz are part of Georgian culture, which still needs to be discovered by the world. Young Georgian Lolitaz may become a new word and the quality defining the Eurovision format. "It is impossible to modify me," says Frontman Nika Kocharov, "I do well what I do." It is the product of sincerity and authenticity which the world could be thirsty for. The Eurovision Song Contest is an opportunity for Georgia to offer high-quality music to the world, introduce alternative culture from Georgia.

"I'm coming up, it's my turn now to be a star" - that's how Young Georgian Lolitaz introduced their album Lemonjuice. The band's debut was successful in Georgia: The album's first track Star was named as the best song of 2004 on the website, with more than 30,000 downloads. Young Georgian Lolitaz soon received an offer from a British label and moved to London to work. The band has recorded three albums and many singles both in Georgia and in the UK. The members of the group have changed many times. Nika Kocharov (Frontman) and Levan Shanshiashvili (Guitar) remained permanent members. Giorgi Marr (Bass Guitar) and Dimitri Oganesian (Drums) are the other members of the band at present.

Nika's father influenced much the distinctive melody of Young Georgian Lolitaz and musical taste of its Frontman: Valeri Kocharov is a famous musician, whose name is connected with popularization of The Beatles in Georgia. Nika's debut was in 1993-1994 when he accompanied his father's band Blitz on a promo tour in Liverpool, where father and son performed Hard Day's Night together. That day Nika received his first gift from the audience - an acoustic guitar. He still creates music on this guitar. Young Georgian Lolitaz' majority of songs and texts as well as video clips and album design belong to Nika.

Guitarist Levan Shanshiashvili stands behind the individual performing style of the band. He is a musician with classical education. This fact distinguishes the band's guitar parts. Levan Shanshiashvili graduated from music school, then Music College and Tbilisi State Conservatoire, department of Classical Guitar. In 1999 he formed the group Chaos, in 2011 the solo project Kid Jesus.

The band's heartbeat is Dimitri Oganesian. One of the best drummers of the country, he was a member of several bands (Hebo CCCP, Alexander Garden, Lady Heroine, Z for Zulu). He also has a classical education, but he has worked in various genres throughout his career. When working in the studio, Dimitri is known for delivering a perfect recording at his very first try.

Giorgi Marr, bass guitarist of Young Georgian Lolitaz with Scottish roots and British musical taste, is the youngest member of the band and an active musician. The festival audience knows him well from Str!ng, ZurGi, and The Black Marrows. Giorgi studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and KABK Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and works as a designer in the musical space: He is Art Director of the Ozone magazine, Chief Designer of Tbilisi Open Air, and Designer of Riffer club.
