Australia’s gonna be alright: Voyager is by your side
06 May 2023 at 13:15 CESTThis isn’t the first time Voyager have thrown their hat in the ring for a place at Eurovision. They’ve been wanting this for as long as Australia has competed in the line up, but in the meantime they’ve toured the world several times over. After years of Eurovision song submissions and a growing fanbase, Australian broadcaster SBS ditched the national competition and selected the band as their 2023 entry.
Unleashed energy, keytars, and eye-catching outfits - you wouldn’t expect anything less from a pop-tastic synth-metal band. Voyager smashed their first rehearsal in Liverpool on Tuesday 2 May, doing everything in the biggest, grandest way possible. Peak moment? Oh, that'll be the actual car on stage!...
In between headbanging along to Voyager’s first rehearsal, the official Eurovision 2023 Live Blog posted: "This is an absolute STOMPER of a tune to finish off the Second Semi-Final – with the 80s-style synths leading into a big old rock chorus.Voyager look like absolute pros, and are rocking both the Liverpool stage and those sequinned houndstooth check outfits."
Being the act that’s travelling the furthest to get to Liverpool, sleep might be a hot topic amongst the quintet. While most of the band will take as much sleep as they can get, Ash told us: “Any sleep is too much sleep.” Apparently, he can function on just four hours of shut eye.
Voyager are big fans of 1990s (and late 1980s) dance bangers, having all grown up in that decade and formed the band in 1999. Heaven by DJ Sammy, Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and anything by Culture Beat are just some of the tracks guaranteed to get most of them on the dancefloor - Ash, who claims he can’t dance, being the exception.
