Making it through for Cyprus: The truth about Silia Kapsis
06 April 2024 at 23:53 CESTAfter Andrew Lambrou had the world transfixed with his Eurovision 2023 entry Break A Broken Heart, Cyprus has found another Cypriot popstar living in Australia. In fact, Silia only lives a few minutes away from Andrew in Sydney, which has been very handy for getting his Eurovision top tips. Now she’s heading to Sweden for the first time, and will be hitting the stage with her song Liar.
Here are 3 things that are true about Silia: she can sing, she can dance, and she can act. As well as a blossoming pop career, she’s worked with world-renowned choreographers in Australia and the USA, and has taken the lead role in short film Pearly Gates. She’s also a regular Nick News host for Nickelodeon, and was nominated for the Kids’ Choice Awards in 2023.
To get used to singing and dancing at the same time, Silia says she’s been rehearsing Liar while running on a treadmill. We’re imagining a more glamorous version of OK Go’s viral music video Here It Goes Again.
Silia has had some really touching moments as a musician. When she was growing up, she used to perform in nursing homes and children’s hospitals to bring happiness to the people there.
This popstar loves to have fun, and if she could have dinner with any 3 people she’d choose Adam Sandler, Kevin Hart, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. She reckons it would be the funniest dinner of all time.
When it comes to Eurovision inspiration, Silia looks up to another legend from Cyprus: Eleni Foureira. Eleni’s Fuego took 2nd place in the 2018 Contest, losing out to Israel’s Netta. Eleni’s dancing was on fire, and we think Silia’s will be too.
Silia’s playlist is full of pop and R&B, heavily featuring Ariana Grande and Michael Jackson. Some of her favourite songs are Rihanna’s Rude Boy, Ariana Grande’s 7 Rings, and Jennifer Lopez’s Jenny From The Block.
Everyone will probably be up on the dancefloor to most of Silia’s playlist (especially Michael Jackson’s Thriller), but the one song that really gets her moving is Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina.
The Official Eurovision Song Contest Podcast spoke to Silia when she was in Cyprus, after a long journey from Sydney. She said: “[I’ve had] literally the best welcome ever. Everyone here is super, super nice. I’ve had the best time. [I’ve been doing] a lot of interviews… and filmed the music video here, which was pretty cool, for my song for Eurovision.”
Next stop — Malmö! Sweden is, honestly, happy to welcome you.
