Tonight: Who will get the ticket from Tbilisi?

01 March 2008 at 01:56 CET

This year will mark only the second year of participation in the Eurovision Song Contest for Georgia. In 2007, the country on the South-Eastern edge of Europe was represented by Sopho, who reached the 12th place in the Eurovision Song Contest with My Story. Sopho had been internally selected to represent her home country. This year, all interested singers had the possibility to take part in an open competition and enter a song - 29 entries were received till the deadline, out of which a jury picked twelve to take part in today's national final.

Who will be the successor to Sopho?

The twelve entries in the Georgian national final cover a wide range of musical styles - from pop ballads to up-tempo ethnic songs, from experimental dance tracks to a traditional male choir singing in Georgian language. With their performances, the singers have to convince both a professional jury and the TV viewers, who can vote by sending SMS messages. In order to increase the public interest, a moving theatre has been touring the city of Tbilisi recently, handing out leaflets about the national final and inviting the passers-by to watch the show and to vote for their favourite song.
