This weekend: Europe selects 4 more participants for Rotterdam

A busy Eurovision national selection weekend is upon us as we will find out who Australia, Italy, Latvia and Malta will fly to Rotterdam to represent their country in May. These national, alongside other finals and multiple semi-finals, will take place all over Europe. Find out where to watch the shows and read up on the national finalists below.

National selection season is in full swing, with one of the busiest national selection weekends coming up. Here is what to expect:

Friday 7 February

10 acts in the race for Australia

Australia Decides - 20:30 AEDT (WATCH LIVE)

First up is Australia, hosted by SBS Eurovisionaries comedian Joel Creasey and music buff Myf Warhurst. Eurovision – Australia Decides will also showcase local and international Eurovision royalty with 4 special guest acts confirmed to perform: Kate Miller-Heidke, winner of the first Eurovision – Australia Decides, Swedish Eurovision 2015 winner Måns Zelmerlöw, Eurovision 2016 runner up Dami Im and Australia’s Junior Eurovision 2019 representative Jordan Anthony.

The final 10 acts that have the chance to represent Australia are:

During the Opening Night Show on Friday 7 February, a jury of artists and industry experts will vote for their favourite performance. Then, the Australian viewers are eligible to vote for their favourite performances from Friday 7 February 20:30 AEDT until Saturday 8 February at approximately 22:15 AEDT. The public vote makes up half of the overall vote.

The artist and song that receives the most overall points will go on to represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in May.

Saturday 8 February

24 hopefuls in the race to become Italy's representative at Sanremo

Sanremo - 20:45 CET - (WATCH LIVE)

On Tuesday 4 February, the Italian song festival started its 70th edition with the first live show from Sanremo. Over the course of the week, and under the artistic direction of the popular Italian presenter Amadeus, the 24 acts performed their songs live from the Ariston Theatre. The artists aiming to become the winner of Sanremo 2020 are:

  • Elettra Lamborghini - Musica (E Il Resto Scompare)
  • Enrico Nigiotti - Baciami Adesso
  • Levante - Tikibombom
  • Pinguini Tattici Nucleari - Ringo Starr
  • Tosca - Ho Amato Tutto
  • Francesco Gabbani - Viceversa
  • Paolo Jannacci - Voglio Parlarti Adesso
  • Rancore - Eden
  • Junior Cally - No Grazie
  • Giordana Angi - Come Mia Madre
  • Michele Zarrillo - Nell'Estasi O Nel Fango

UPDATE: The song Sincero got automatically disqualified when one of its performers, Bugo, abandoned the stage at the beginning of the performance, when his partner, Morgan, decided to sing different lyrics, thus breaking the rules of the competition. That means there will be 23 acts in the race to become Italy's representative in Eurovision.

Latvia picks their representative

Supernova - 20:25 CET (WATCH LIVE)

Supernova 2020 will be hosted by Ketija Šēnberga, Toms Grēviņš and Beta Beidz. This will be the fourth time TV presenters Toms Grēviņš and Ketija Šēnberga host Supernova together and it's the TV debut for budding vlogger and social media influencer Beta Beidz who will talk to the contestants after their performances.

A draw for running order positions for the final was held live on Latvian Television morning news by producer Ilze Jansone and host Ketija Šēnberga. The running order for Supernova 2020 will be:

  3. Katrīna Bindere – I Will Break Your Heart
  4. Edgars Kreilis – Tridymite
  5. Katrīna Dimanta – Heart Beats
  6. Miks Dukurs – I’m Falling For You

  8. Bad Habits – Sail With You
  9. Samanta Tīna – Still Breathing

Viewers will be able to vote online at https://supernova.lsm.lv/lv/ once hosts have announced that voting is open. There can be a maximum of 5 votes per IP address.

Malta picks their entry

X Factor Malta - 20:50 CET (WATCH LIVE)

The final of X Factor Malta will take place this Saturday and will be broadcasted live on Television Malta. In 2019, the show was used as a platform to pick the Maltese representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 and the same will happen this weekend for the 2020 entry. These are the finalists:
