'Supernova' winner Tautumeitas will sing for Latvia in Basel
08 February 2025 at 22:29 CETOn Saturday 8 February it was time for Latvia to choose its song for Basel. After a semi-final round of the Latvian Eurovision pre-selection one week earlier, 10 songs took part in the final of Supernova.
Voting on the songs was done via a public vote and a jury vote, with both sources being responsible for 50% of the final result.
In the end, three songs tied on 18 points. The group Tautumeitas were declared the winner with their song Bur man laimi, as it had received the highest number of votes from the public of those three songs.
In second place was Emilija with Heartbeat, and in third place were the band Citi Zēni and their song Ramtai.
Tautumeitas
An ethno and pop music group that combines Latvian-folk melodies and lyrics with modern beats, Tautumeitas are proud of being known for creating a strong Latvian sound.
The group further expresses itself creatively via the development of their image and the visuals they use; where costumes and crowns reflect how close both traditional and futuristic values are to the musicians. Several members have studied ethnomusicology, so the group's music is often influenced by the folk music of various other countries.
The group's debut album Tautumeitas won the 'Golden Microphone' award for Best Folk/World Music Album of the Year in 2018, while the album Dziesmas no Aulejas won the same award in 2020.
As well as performing in their native Latvia, the group has also taken to stages in China, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, France and Poland.
Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest
Latvia made its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest that took place in Stockholm in the year 2000.
Their first participating artist was the popular indie band Brainstorm who placed third on the scoreboard with their song My Star.
The country’s only victory (so far) came soon after in 2002, when Marie N won the Contest with her latin pop number I Wanna. She gave a memorable performance that saw the gradual removal of several items of clothing to reveal a long dress that had been concealed by a white suit and trilby hat.
When Latvia hosted the next Contest in Riga in 2003, Marie N returned alongside Brainstorm lead-singer Renārs Kaupers to co-host the show.
