Spain's Amaia y Alfred share their love story in Lisbon

The young couple Amaia and Alfred arrived at Lisbon's Altice Arena for the first rehearsal of the Spanish entry 'Tu Canción'. Their song and stage performance tell us about their love story, which started during their time at the Operación Triunfo academy, the talent show used to select the country's Eurovision entry this year.

Amaia y Alfred won the Spanish ticket for the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in the talent show school academy Operación Triunfo with their love song Tu Canción. Their unique singing style and dynamic personalities have become something of a phenomenon in Spain. Amaia Romero, born in 1999 in Pamplona, Spain, began her music career by studying piano at a young age. Alfred García, in 1997 in El Prat de Llobregat, near Barcelona, has been equally passionate about music all of his life.

Amaia and Alfred started a relationship during their four-month stay at the Operación Triunfo academy, witnessed by viewers of the show across Spain and beyond. They both reached the final stage of the competition, which allowed them to participate in the Eurovision selection. There they performed a duet penned especially for them by Raul Gomez and Sylvia Santoro. Alfred and Amaia embraced the song in a personal way and will now share it with viewers around the world.

In their first rehearsal performance, the duo delivered an intimate and romantic performance under an overhead spotlight. Amaia wore a blush jumpsuit with sparkling boots, and Alfred a burgundy jacket with an appliquéd shoulder. talked to Amaia y Alfred right after their rehearsal. Amaia expressed her feelings about performing on the Eurovision stage in Lisbon for the first time: "We've felt super comfortable on this stage, because it's strikingly similar to the Operación Triunfo one, back in Spain, and we know that stage very well!".

Alfred explained the meaning of Tu Canción: "The song is about us and I think it's a very beautiful description that the songwriters have made. It metaphors about some of the things we lived during our time in the academy, so when we listened to it for the first time we were blown away completely. We completely identify ourselves with the song". 

Amaia y Alfred will represent Spain in the Grand Final  of the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon on the 12th of May.
