The final of UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu), the Finnish national selection for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest, just finished at the Helsinki Ice Hall.
The UMK Final show started with a dance followed by the performance of Top Finnish band The Rasmus. Presented by Joona Kortesmäki & Anne Lainto, the competition got off to a start with the six participants (super-finalists in bold):
After the performance of Anna Abreu, one of the special guests, a super-final was announced with three participants, who sang their songs again (winner in bold):
Among the guest stars we had Paradise Oskar and last year's Finnish entry Da Da Dam, which reached the Final in Düsseldorf. Then, the winner was announced: the song in the Swedish language, När Jag Blundar (When I Close My Eyes), performed by Pernilla Karlsson and written by Jonas Karlsson.
Pernilla Karlsson's biggest chance
Pernilla tried every chance to shoot to success. She studied music and piano and was the "Sankta Lucia" maiden as a little girl, among many other children's theater performances where she had the opportunity to sing. In 2006 she participated in the song contest in Finland-Sweden "Världens Minsta schlagerfestival". She was 15 years old, and it turned out to be a great experience, as she won the contest.
I sing the songs that mean something to me. They should have a message and an idea behind it, so you're able to empathize with them naturally
Thereafter, she started to gave up singing little by little until her brother created their own record label and production studio in Helsinki. "He made me excited again about music and singing, with a more adult way of thinking; I began to really believe and feel that singing is my thing, after all".
At the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest, Finland competes in the first semi-final in Baku on the 22nd of May.
