Nordics give in to Eurovision fever this weekend

25 January 2013 at 19:14 CET

It'll all start tonight when Iceland has their first semi-final. And Saturday will be the day when Denmark picks their entry for this year's Eurovision Song Contest in addition to Iceland and Norway having their second semi-finals.

Who's in the game tonight?

In Iceland, we'll see some interesting participants this year. Namely, Yohanna, their 2009 participant is back and she's competing against Birgitta Haukdal who represented the small country in 2003! Here's the full line-up for tonight.

  • Magni Ásgeirsson - Ekki Líta Undan
  • Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson - Ég á Líf
  • Svavar Knútur Kristinsson and Hreindís Ylva Garðarsdóttir Hólm - Lífið Snýst
  • Birgitta Haukdal - Meðal Andanna
  • Edda Viðarsdóttir - Sá sem Lætur Hjartað Ráða För
  • Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir (Yohanna) - Þú

The Icelandic public will choose three songs from each semi final to progress to the final on February 2nd. It is possible that as in the past years, producers of the show may choose a wildcard seventh entry to progress to the final.

What about Saturday?

The highlight of Saturday is of course Denmark picking their entry. They also have some interesting returners. Namely, Brinck who represented the country already in 2009 as well as the songwriter Thomas G:son who's penned several songs for the Eurovision Song contest before, most recently the Swedish winner Euphoria by Loreen.

Norway is almost trying to beat them in this by putting the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest winner, Alexander Rybak back in the game in their second semi-final. This time as a songwriter, though.

Three will qualify from this semi-final for the final which will take place on the 9th of February.

Iceland will have their second semi-final on Saturday too and of course it also has great participants.

Sveinn Rúnar Sigurðsson was responsible for the Icelandic entries of 2004, Heaven by Jónsi and 2007, Valentine Lost by Eiríkur Hauksson. Jonas Gladnikoff was part of the team behind the Irish entries for Sinéad Mulvey & Black Daisy and Niamh Kavanagh respectively in the 2009 and 2010. Ashley Hicklin co-wrote Tom Dice's Belgian entry Me And My Guitar in 2010.

They will compete on Saturday for the last 3 tickets for the Icelandic final:

  • Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir - Augnablik
  • Unnur Eggertsdóttir - Ég Syng!
  • Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir - Skuggamynd
  • Sylvía Erla Scheving - Stund Með þér
  • Jógvan Hansen and Stefanía Svavarsdóttir - Til þín
  • Haraldur Reynisson - Vinátta

The Icelandic public will choose three songs from each semi final to progress to the final on the 2nd of February. It is possible that as in the past years, producers of the show may choose a wildcard seventh entry to progress to the final.

During the final, a 50/50 split between jury and televoting will determine the two songs which progress to the super final. At that stage it will be 100% televoting which will determine the overall winner.

Enjoy the great weekend ahead!
