Nemo will perform 'The Code' in Malmö for Switzerland
29 February 2024 at 11:00 CETWe're excited to be deciphering The Code this far ahead of Malmö - as we get acquainted with the Swiss entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in May.
And Nemo, from Biel in the Bern canton of Switzerland, is equally excited to be telling us all about their song:
"'The Code' is about the journey I started with the realisation that I am neither a man nor a woman. Finding myself has been a long and often difficult process for me. But nothing feels better than the freedom I have gained by realising that I am non-binary."
The Code is being heralded as not just a song, but a safe space through which every person can find their truth. Nemo‘s truth lies between the 0s and 1s of the binary system:
"Somewhere between the 0s and 1s, that‘s where I found my kingdom come.“
Nemo‘s personal story therefore becomes a universal narrative; a call for everyone to crack their own code and enter the kingdom of authenticity. And the artist is particularly delighted that they get to use the stage of Malmö 2024 to showcase their song and the code contained within:
"It is an incredible honour to be able to represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest. This platform offers a huge opportunity to build bridges between different cultures and generations. That‘s why it‘s very important to me as a gender-queer person to stand up for the entire LGBTQIA+ community.“
Born in 1999 in Biel, a small bilingual town in Switzerland, Nemo has been playing the violin, piano and drums since they were a small child.
In 2016, Nemo became famous overnight through an appearance at SRF Virus (#Cypher), which went viral on social media. Afterwards they released two EPs - through which 7 songs made it directly onto the official Swiss Singles Charts. Since then, Nemo has been awarded with an impressive five Swiss Music Awards.
2020 marked the beginning of a period of change for Nemo, when they started writing and producing for other artists. Nemo also took the first steps beyond the Swiss borders and started releasing songs in English.
In their music, Nemo deals with themes such as gender identity, mental health and finding one‘s place in this world. The artist currently lives in Berlin.
The Code was written by Nemo along with Lasse Nyman, Linda Dale and Benjamin Alasu. According to Nemo, it is:
"The artistic manifesto of my personal journey; a distinctive piece of music which combines rap, drum n‘ bass and opera."
At the Eurovision Song Contest in May, Switzerland will perform in the First Half of the Second Semi-Final.
