Meet the Norwegian artists - Part 1

Now that you know who the 15 acts that will take part in the 2014 edition of Melodi Grand Prix are, you can find out about them in more detail. As there will be 3 Semi-Finals on the 7th, 8th and 9th of March, we have split these bios over three articles.

The first five acts

Song 1

Hilda & Thea Leora - Best Friend`s Boyfriend
Music & Lyrics: Martin Kleveland, Lisa Desmond Linder & Jesper Jakobsen

Swede Hilda Stenmalm (17) won the song competition Stjärnskott in 2009 and is known as the voice behind the Disney Channel’s official Christmas song, A Little Magic. Her single Brief and Beautiful, co-written by Hanne Sørvaag was a big hit in Sweden in 2011. 

Oslo-born Thea Leora Oskarsen (20) became a member of the pop group Fixx at the tender age of 14. Her YouTube videos where she covered famous pop songs have had 1.5 million views. In 2011 she released the single One of a Kind written by Ina Wroldsen and David Eriksen. In 2013 Thea Leora released the album Badly

The Norwegian-Swedish partnership between the two girls happened via record produce Martin Kleveland (Martin K) who has also produced the girl’s MGP-song. Martin K is a four time platinum selling record producer and songwriter signed to Jay-Z and Stargate’s label StarRoc. He works as a pianist and professional DJ. Swede Lisa Desmond Linder has had big success as a songwriter for Japanese Kana Nishino, Anna Bergendahl and Timoteij. 

Song 2

Mo - Heal
Music & Lyrics: Laila Samuelsen

Mohamed Abdi Farah (21) is better known as Mo and has lived a life full of big contrasts. As a 7 year old he came to Norway as a refugee from war-torn Somalia. He group up in Hamar and had his breakthrough as an artist after a popular stint on X-Factor in 2010. With two single releases, radio play and performances on several TV programs, Mo’s career was progressing well when terror hit Oslo and Utøya on 22 July 2011. As a participant at the AUF summer camp that year, Mo was personally affected by the events. After a long break, he is finally ready to pick up where he left off. 

Mo will take to the MGP-stage with the song Heal, a powerful pop ballad about getting back on your feet after a difficult period. The song is written by Laila Samuelsen, who is known both as a solo artist, member of The Tuesdays and songwriter for a plethora of Norwegian and international artists. She has previously participated as songwriter at MGP for Venke Knutson and Gaute Ormåsen among others. 

Song 3

Dina Misund - Needs
Music: Dina Misund. Lyrics: Frode Bjørgmo Strømvik

Dina Misund (25) from Misund in Romsdalen released her debut album Listen in 2010. The album received critical acclaim and quickly rose through the charts. In 2011 the Bylarm audience got to experience Dina’s unique voice and her melodic pop-country songs. Several of her songs have also been listed on radio P1. 

With the song Needs, which she has written with her boyfriend Frode Bjørgmo Strømvik, Dina hopes to be able to send out a musical warning about our high levels of consumption. 

Song 4

Linnea Dale - High Hopes
Music & Lyrics: Linnea Dale & Kim Bergseth

Linnea Dale grew up in Telemark and her unique voice crept into our ears, consciousness and hearts back in 2007 via Idol, which she as a 15 year old made it to the final. After this, Linnea became part of the pop-venture Donkeyboy. Despite her young age, Linnea has life experience and musical references that make her a unique addition to Norway’s musical landscape. Her debut album Lemoyne Street from 2012 was a collaboration with Øystein Greni and Nikolai Eilertsen. 

Now Linnea Dale is 22 years old and soon finished with her second solo album, where she has worked with producers Kim Bergseth and Paal Waaaktaar. In addition to her music, she studies at Blindern. 

Song 5

TIMBRE & Frikk Heide-Steen feat. Ida Stein - Frozen By Your Love
Music & Lyrics: TIMBRE

Anders Grindheim Bratterud (21) aka TIMBRE is a promising music producer from Oslo that is counting on huge success in the EDM and house genres. Frozen By Your Love is the first song that he has released under the artist name TIMBRE, at the same record company that houses artists like CLMD and Eye Emma Jedi. With him on stage, TIMBRE is joined by two exciting vocalists:

Frikk Heide-Steen (25) comes from a solid artistic family in Bærum. He started in Sølvguttene at the age of 8 and has contributed to a number productions at Den Norske Opera and in several NRK-programs. Besides his versatile music career, he is the second conductor for Sølvguttene. In 2013 he performed with CLMD on radio P3 Gull. 

Sandefjord girl Ida Stein (21) debuted in 2013 with the single The Darkest Eyes who was fronted in WiMP’s New Sound campagne. Ida has also participated in several exciting musical projects, including as a vocalist in Audiovirgin and part of the vocals of Proviant Audi’s Spellemann-nominated Drift Days & Disco Nights. Last year she released a version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun together with Shaun Bartlett. Ida is soon ready with her first EP.

As mentioned above, three Semi-Finals will take place on the 7th, 8th and 9th of March before a Grand Final on the 15th of March at the Oslo Spektrum Arena. Three songs from each Semi-Final will qualify to Final. 

Norway is taking part in the second Semi-Final of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen on the 8th of May. The Grand Final takes place on the 10th of May.
