Malta to Belgrade with Vodka!

The Maltese final was held this evening at the Malta Fairs & Convention Centre in Ta Qali and was presented by John Demanuele, Ruth Casingena and 1998 and 2005 Maltese representative at the Eurovision Song Contest, Chiara.

Long process

Prior to the final, 225 songs had originally been submitted and they were narrowed down eventually to 17 songs by foreign and local judges. The 17 songs took part in the semi-final on Thursday the 24th of January, and were narrowed down to the eight competing this evening by an expert jury.

Olivia Lewis opened the show with a performance of her 2007 Eurovision Song Contest song Vertigo and a version of Bryan Adams' hit Heaven.

Australian connection

2007 Australian Pop Idol winner Natalie Gauci, who is of  Maltese descent performed as part of the interval act along with Chiara. Natalie and Chiara sang a duet of Chiara's 2005 Eurovision Song Contest entry Angel

The voting then commenced and this was determined by both jury (20% of vote) and televoting (80% of vote). The results were as follows; 

  • 3rd Place – Claudia Faniello – Sunrise
  • 2nd Place – Claudia Faniello – Caravaggio
  • 1st Place – Morena – Vodka

Morena will participate in one of the two Semi-Finals of the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade in May.
