12 December 2011 at 22:08 CET

Malina Olinescu was born to a family of artists in January 29th, 1974 in the Romanian capital of Bucharest. Her professional career started in 1995, when she started to appear in the country's most acclaimed music festivals, like Mamaia and Cerbul de Aur (Golden Stag).

Her first national hit came in 1997 with Mi-e Dor De Tine, and in the following year, she already won the Romanian national final for the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest with Eu Cred, thus representing her home country in Birmingham. Her album Pot Să Zbor appeared shortly afterwards and instantly became a hit.

In 2003, she again participated in the Romanian national final, this time with the song Tacerea Doare (The Silence Hurts) - a nice song to commemorate her on this tragic day. You can watch it on youtube.

Malina Olinescu died last night in Bucharest at the age of 37.

The whole Eurovision Song Contest team of the European Broadcasting Union offers their deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Malina.
