Jérémie Makiese will represent Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. The singer from Uccle won The Voice Belgique 2021 and is now on his way to compete in one of the world’s biggest music competitions.

It’s become a bit of a tradition for Belgium to declare their Eurovision representative first. Broadcaster VRT announced Sennek first for the 2018 competition and Hooverphonic for 2020, so it comes as little surprise broadcaster RTBF followed suit for 2022.

Who is Jérémie?

Jérémie was born to Congolese parents in Antwerp, Belgium. At 6 years old he and his family (including his three brothers and sister) moved to Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, then to Dilbeek a few years later, and finally settled in Uccle. The town is a bilingual municipality found in the capital of Brussels. Jérémie learnt to speak both Dutch and French from an early age.

Music runs in Jérémie’s veins. His mother sings and plays the tam-tam (a type of gong) and his father was a member of a choir. As a young child, Jérémie used to sing in church but his interest in music truly began when he started singing lessons at his local school.

His father quickly recognised Jérémie’s talent and registered him into a singing contest at school. Jérémie won the competition and it inspired him to sign up for The Voice Belgique.

Jérémie chose an angelic interpretation of Jealous by Labyrinth for his Blind Audition. All four judges turned their chairs (including former Belgian Eurovision entrant Loïc Nottet). Jérémie went on to win the competition and continues to be mentored by his friend and coach BJ Scott.

After winning the show, Jérémie decided to put his geology study on hold and solely focus on his passion for music and football. Interestingly, Jérémie is also a fantastic goalkeeper and has just signed a contract at Excelsior Virton!

But for now, he is preparing for the Eurovision Song Contest – this time in Italy!
