Luxembourg plans return to Eurovision?

27 October 2014 at 15:26 CET

The question of a possible return was posed by the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest winner Linda Martin at Luxembourg's seventh Eurovision Gala Night on Saturday. The return was reportedly agreed to by the country’s Minister of Culture, Maggy Nagel who had 'nodded' as an answer.

Long and successful Eurovision history

Luxembourg was one of the first countries to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956 and have managed to win the trophy on five different occasions. The small country managed to score some of the best known Eurovision hits, have a look at a few of them!

Vicky Leandros’ L'amour Est Bleu

The original song placed 4th in 1967 but Vicky Leandros came back and won the contest in 1972. Both songs have become celebrated entries among the fans.

L'amour Est Bleu was revamped in 2011 and released by the German pop icon Scooter.

Baccara’s Parlez-Vous Français

Even though the song managed to place 7th at the 1978 contest, it ended up being one of the biggest hits in Europe that year.

Anne-Marie David’s Tu Te Reconnaîtras

Anne-Marie David won the contest in 1973, scoring a two-times in a row victory for the country.

The song was also re-released in 2011 in co-operation with the German artist Mave O'Rick.

Nana Mouskouri’s À Force De Prier

One of the biggest female stars of all times, Nana Mouskouri represented the country in 1963. She went on to sell more than 300 million records.

Did you know?

  • Luxembourg pulled out of the event in 1994 and thus, they would possibly return after 21 years. A similar return was made a few years ago when Italy returned to the contest after a decade to a great success.
  • Lara Fabian, now a well-known singer, also represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest. She was beaten by at-that-time-equally-unknown Celine Dion.
  •  From 1956 to 1993, Luxembourg missed only one contest, in 1959.
  • Their amount of victories - 5 - is only surpassed by Ireland's seven trophies.
