Liverpool 2023: The multi BAFTA-nominated Eurovision Song Contest!
20 March 2024 at 17:39 CETOn Wednesday 20 March, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the full list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA Television Awards and BAFTA Television Craft Awards.
Celebrating the very best in television broadcast in 2023, a total of 118 programmes had nominations bestowed upon them - with the well-received Liverpool event, the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, being one of them.
The BAFTA nominations that the BBC's production of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 have received are:
BAFTA Television Awards
- Live Event Coverage
- Entertainment Performance (Hannah Waddingham)
BAFTA Television Craft Awards
- Entertainment Craft Team (Julio Himede, Tim Routledge, Kojo Samuel, Michael Sharp, Dan Shipton)
- Director: Multi Camera (Nikki Parsons, Ollie Bartlett, Richard Valentine)
In the Entertainment Performance category, Hannah Waddingham is up against, among others, her Eurovision Song Contest 2023 co-host Graham Norton. Graham is nominated for his popular BBC talk show The Graham Norton Show.
Remarkably, this is Hanna Waddingham's first time nominated at the BAFTA Television Awards. And in the 2024 list of nominees, the talented host, singer and actress picked up a second nomination, in the Entertainment category, for her seasonal show for Apple TV, Hannah Waddingham: Home For Christmas.
The Eurovision Song Contest's nominations haul of 4 is an impressive one - and puts the BBC event in the Top 10 most-nominated programmes at the 2024 Awards.
In the elite list, the Liverpool broadcast is in such esteemed company as The Crown (on 8 nominations), Demon 79 (Black Mirror) (7 nominations), Happy Valley, Slow Horses and The Sixth Commandment (6 nominations), The Last Of Us, The Long Shadows and Succession (5 nominations), and Once Upon a Time In Northern Ireland (also on 4 nominations).
The BAFTA Television Awards, hosted by Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, will take place one day after the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, on Sunday 12 May. The BAFTA Television Craft Awards take place on Sunday 28 April.
The BAFTA Television Awards is an entertainment institution that's been running for almost the same amount of time as the Eurovision Song Contest itself. The very first awards ceremony took place in 1955, just one year before the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest came to us from Switzerland.
