The Swedish national selection, Melodifestivalen, is an annual television highlight for SVT. The shows, coming for a different city every week, are often sold out in no-time and attract high numbers of viewers and strong market shares.
This year, 3,489 songs were submitted for the competition. Highlights this year are the return of Charlotte Pirelli, who won the Eurovision Song Contest as Charlotte Nilson for Sweden in 1999, and the participation of BWO.
