France Télévisions has announced that enigmatic pop star La Zarra will carry the tricolore to Liverpool for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest.

The Parisian artist says: ‘I am very proud to have the chance to perform my song in front of millions of viewers around the world. I am a great admirer of the most beautiful French voices such as Edith Piaf, Barbara, Dalida, but also Céline Dion, and I am so excited to make all Europeans discover my song which I hope will become theirs.

I am very honoured to represent France at Eurovision, the most iconic song contest in the world.’

The French delegation describes La Zarra as an artist who asserts everything without concession: ‘the voice, the look, the energy, the hips!’

‘She combines the class and style of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, with the sense of tragedy of Edith Piaf, the post-modern intoxication of Lady Gaga, the naked frankness of Barbara, and the fragility of Dalida.’

As a child growing up in Canada, La Zarra would dream of French fashion and music, and spent hours watching videos of Mylène Farmer and Céline Dion in concert, at the same time as absorbing the unique cultural influences from her family’s Moroccan origins.

It’s those early memories the songstress took with her to Paris that continue to influence her as an artist today.

Head of Delegation for France, Alexandra Redde-Amiel, said:

‘From our first meeting, La Zarra won us over! What an honour to welcome this great artist in the Eurovision family!

Mysterious, inspiring, charismatic, La Zarra is a woman and a modern artist with a chic French signature! A voice that transports us through time by making us travel to different eras. From Barbara through Brel or Dalida to Marylin Monroe, La Zarra is an iconic artist who will carry the colors of France in Liverpool in May 2023 during the largest song contest in the world.’

Having secured second place at Eurovision 2021, and winning Junior Eurovision twice in recent years, the French delegation is keen to continue its run of excellent results with La Zarra.

The song will be revealed in due course, but for a taste of what the artist has in store you can visit La Zarra’s official YouTube channel.
