Justine Pelmelay on capsized Italian cruiser

14 January 2012 at 20:22 CET

On Facebook, Justine tells the world that she and her partner are safe: "Dear friends, what a panic! We were on the ship, we survived," the former Eurovision star writes according to newspaper De Telegraaf.

Passengers described the dramatic events "alike Titanic", saying they escaped the ship by crawling along upended hallways, desperately trying to get out safety as the lights went out and plates and glasses crashed.

Ironically, Pelmelay represented her country in the year that Celine Dion opened the Eurovision Song Contest. The latter would record My Heart Will Go On, the famous title song of James Cameron's Titanic, in 1997. This year, on 12th of April, it is exactly 100 years ago that the British passenger ship sunk on its maiden voyage.

The Eurovision.tv team pays tribute to all those affected by this tragedy.
