It's Trackshittaz for Austria!

25 February 2012 at 00:11 CET

Österreich rockt den Song Contest - that's the title of tonight's Austrian national final, in which no less than ten singers and bands competed. The show was presented by Mirjam Weichselbraun, Robert Kratky and Andi Knoll, who is also the current Austrian commentator in the Eurovision Song Contest.

In the first part of the show, all ten participants performed their entries, and then two super-finalists were picked by the televoters. This is the result of the first round of voting (in order of appearance, qualifiers in bold):

  • James Cottriall - Stand Up
  • Krautschädl - Einsturzgefohr
  • Valerie- Comme ça
  • 3punkt5 - Augenblick
  • Conchita Wurst - That's What I Am
  • Mary Broadcast Band - How Can You Ask Me!
  • !DelaDap - Don’t Turn Around
  • Papermoon -  Vater, Father, Mon Père
  • Trackshittaz - Woki mit deim Popo
  • Norbert Schneider - Medicate My Blues Away

In between, a talk show-like atmosphere was created on a balcony high above the stage. The guests included Nadine Beiler, Petra Frey, Marianne Mendt and Eric Papilaya, all of which are previous Austrian Eurovision Song Contest representatives, as well as several other Austrian celebrities.

The line-up included all kinds of musical styles, from rap to French chanson, and from swing-meets-gypsy music to a euro-pop song performed by a bearded woman! The latter, Conchita Wurst, managed to qualify for the super-final, along with Trackshittaz and their cheerful dance act.

After a commercial break, the two super-finalists performed again, and the second round of televoting was started.

In the end, Trackshittaz won the battle in a tight race, gaining 51% of the super-final votes. Thus, they will represent Austria in Baku with their energetic song Woki Mit Deim Popo, which is sung in the dialect of the Mühlviertel region in Austria. Last year, they already took part in the Austrian final with Oida Taunz, but came only second behind Nadine Beiler.
