26 February 2017 at 23:39 CET
Triana Park has won Supernova 2017, the Latvian national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, with the song Line. Latvia has qualified for the Grand Final ever since Supernova was launched in 2015.

Supernova 2017 consisted of two heats and a semi-final before tonight's final. In total 22 acts competed for the right to represent Latvia in 2017. Where as in the previous heats the qualifiers were determined by a mixture of jury and public votes, Triana Park were selected solely by the public to fly the Latvian flag in Ukraine. Triana Park have participated in the Latvian selection for the Eurovision Song Contest several times. In 2010 they released their debut album, Entertainment.

The finalists in 2017

  • Triana Park - Line (1st)
  • My Radiant You - All I Know (2nd)
  • The Ludvig - I'm In Love With You (4th)
  • Santa Daņeļeviča - Your Breath (3rd)

During the show the Riga Beaver, which has become a cult figure for many followers of Supernova, also made an appearance.

The Latvian broadcaster, Latvijas Televīzija, announced that streaming from Spotify would be included in the voting during the final of Supernova 2017. The addition is a reflection of the move from physical music sales to downloads and streaming. Petri Mannonen, Commercial Director, Universal Finland said, "Supernova partnering up with Spotify is an innovative approach to include digital music consumption in the selection process. It makes sense – as the more popular a track becomes within Spotify the more potential it will have to succeed".

Przemek Pluta, Strategy and Operations Lead for Universal in CEE and Baltics added, "We are super excited to work together with the  Supernova show. Spotify is booming and is the main source of music for many (young) people in Latvia. It will be the first time that we give data on music consumption back to the audience of the Eurovision qualifications show".

Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest

Latvia made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm in 2000 with the group Brainstorm who finished third with the song My Star. Only two years later Latvia's Marie N went on to win the contest in Tallinn with the song I Wanna. Triana Park is the 18th act to represent Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest. Latvia scored its third top five placing in 2005, the last time that Ukraine hosted the Eurovision Song Contest. In a few short months we'll find out if Latvia will once again return to the top five on Ukrainian soil.
