Iceland: ‘Söngvakeppnin' 2022 songs revealed 🇮🇸

05 February 2022 at 21:30 CET
Söngvakeppnin will decide who represents Iceland in Turin
Ten songs will compete in Söngvakeppnin across February and March, all hoping to build on the success enjoyed by Daði Freyr og Gagnamadnið at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2021 when Iceland finished 4th.

The lineup is a mix of Icelandic and international superstars (both writers and performers) and emerging talent, including an Oscar winner and an all-female rap collective... so let’s take a look…

The 10 entries (available to listen to below) will be split evenly across two Semi-Finals on Saturday 26 February and Saturday 5 March. The public will decide which two songs progress from each Semi-Final, alongside a potential wildcard entry decided by Söngvakeppnin’s executive committee.

The winner of the five-song Grand Final on Saturday 12 March will be decided by a combination of televotes and an international jury.

Our hosts for the contest are Björg Magnúsdóttir, Jón Jónsson and Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir, and they are expected to be joined by special guests; the likes of Måns Zelmerlöw, Loreen, Alexander Rybak and Sandra Kim have performed at Söngvakeppnin in recent years.

The Icelandic competition’s unique set of rules state that songs must be performed in Icelandic during the Semi-Finals but can switch to English should an act qualify for the Grand Final. This is why some songs have extra lyricists credited.

This year, one song (Með Hækkandi Sól) will remain in Icelandic throughout the duration of the run.
