Iceland have qualified for the Final of Europe's Favourite TV Show for the last four years running, and finished in second place in 2009 in Moscow, when Yohanna's haunting ballad Is It True lost out only to Norway's Fairytale from Alexander Rybak.

After their recent successes, Icelandic broadcaster RUV has decided to keep the format of the Icelandic selection Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2012 similar to that of recent years. In summary, the announcements were as follows:-

  • Closing date for entries is October 10th 2011, the songs progressing to the televised phase of the selectionwill be decided by an internal committee, with the real identity of authors remaining secret to avoid biased decisions
  • A press conference will be held to reveal the names of the successful songs, and then during January and February the semi finals and final of Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins will take place, dates yet to be confirmed by RUV
  • Both native Icelandic citizens and people legally residing in the country before October 1st 2010 can apply
  • Icelandic composers are permitted to collaborate with composers residing overseas and each composer may enter a maximum of three songs
  • All of the entries for Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2012 are to be performed entirely in Icelandic

Sjonni's Friends finished in 20th place in the 2011 Final of Europe's Favourite TV Show with Coming Home.
