For the fifth year in a row, the A Dal festival has served to pick the Hungarian representatives for the Eurovision Song Contest. Tonight it was time for the final of the 2016 edition, with eight acts still in the running to grab the ticket to Stockholm. After two rounds of voting, the winning trophy was handed to Freddie. He will sing Pioneer in Stockholm.

In an exciting final of A Dal 2016, Freddie won the right to represent Hungary in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. He won the super-final against three competing acts by the decision of the televoters. Before that, a jury had chosen the super-finalists out of eight entries.

If you missed the show, you can watch it again on-demand in our WebTV player. You can watch Freddie's winning performance of Pioneer below:

Freddie, whose real name is Gábor Alfréd Fehérvári, became known as the "shower boy" in the Hungarian Rising Star when he admitted that he only had the shower head as his audience for a long time. The singer is a relatively new face in the Hungarian music scene but he already has many fans thanks to his uniquely smoky voice and his top hit Mary Joe.

The following acts had qualified for the super-final:

  1. Freddie
  2. Gergő Oláh
  3. Kállay Saunders Band
  4. Petruska

Here are the full jury points:

This was the running order of the first round in tonight's show:

  • Mushu - Uncle Tom
  • Parno Graszt - Már nem szĂ©dĂĽlök
  • OlivĂ©r Berkes & Andi TĂłth - Seven Seas
  • Petruska - Trouble in My Mind
  • GergĹ‘ Oláh - GyĹ‘z a jĂł
  • Freddie - Pioneer
  • Kállay Saunders Band - Who We Are
  • AndrĂ© Vásáry - Why

Kállay Saunders Band band performed their song once again in the first round due to technical difficulties: lead singer András Kállay Saunders, who had represented the country already solo in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, stated that he could not hear his voice in the ear monitors.

Two rounds of voting led to the winner: First an expert jury panel determined four super-finalists. After that the TV viewers solely decided the winning act out of the four remaining entries.

Tonight's show spun across a wide selection of musical styles, including gypsy music by Parno Graszt, a popera cross-over song with falsetto parts by André Vásáry, and a lot of contemporary pop songs designed to do well in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Apart from the winner's trophy, By The Way were awared for the Best Acoustic Performance tonight.

In the first semi-final, the jury had already handed the award for the Best Lyrics of A Dal, which was received by Borbála Csarnai - she wrote the lyrics to Freddie's song Pioneer. One week before that Petruska had been given the award for the Best Newcomer.

A Dal - which means The Song - is a popular national selection format developed by the Hungarian public service broadcaster. Already for the fifth time, it serves as a platform to select the Hungarian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. Since A Dal has been introduced as the Hungarian national selection method for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012, it has proved to be not only a successful TV show but also an important new platform to introduce artists, bands and composers to a large audience.

Csilla Tatár and Levente Harsányi hosted tonight's show. The expert jury comprised Zséda, Pierrot, Károly Frenreisz and Miklós Both. You can find more detailed information about the voting above.

In the interval, last year's Hungarian contestant, Boggie, performed one of her greatest hits - Camouflage. After that, 2009 Eurovision Song Contest winner Alexander Rybak entered the stage to perform his Fairytale once again for the Hungarian TV viewers.
