Norwegian public broadcaster NRK hosted the final of 'Melodi Grand Prix' tonight. Finalists from all regions of Norway that went head-to-head to battle for the country’s ticket to Eurovision 2020. After the public vote was announced, Ulrikke was crowned the winner of 'MGP 2020' and Norway's representative for Rotterdam with her song 'Attention'.

After 5 regional semi-finals, it was time for the final of Norway's Melodi Grand Prix (MGP). This year, NRK wanted to celebrate the 60-year anniversary of their first participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960 through a special edition of MGP, and the semi-finals were brought back for the first time since 2014.

The final show

The final was moved from Oslo to Trondheim, where last year's MGP winners and Norway's entry in Eurovision 2019, KEiiNO, opened the show as the 10 competing acts were introduced to the audience. The presenters, Kåre Magnus Bergh (hosting MGP for the sixth time), Ingrid Gjessing Linhave and Ronny Brede Aase appeared on stage to guide the audience through the proceedings.

These were the finalists in their running order (qualifiers in bold):

  • Raylee - Wild
  • Didrik & Emil - Out Of Air
  • Magnus Bokn - Over The Sea
  • Akuvi - Som du er
  • Kristin Husøy - Pray For Me
  • Rein Alexander - One Last Time
  • Tone Damli - Hurts Sometimes
  • Sondrey - Take My Time
  • Ulrikke - Attention
  • Liza Vassilieva - I Am Gay

The Gold Final

The 10 artists were first narrowed down to 4: Raylee, Kristin Husøy, Ulrikke and Liza Vassilieva. Voting then re-opened allowing viewers a fresh chance to re-cast their votes for the next round. The 2 with the highest votes, Kristin Husøy and Ulrikke, sang again in the Gold Final, and the votes reset and online voting re-opened for the last time.

To build tension before the reveal, a representative from each region of Norway read the scores for their region. The spokespeople were KEiiNO singer Tom Hugo for the South, 2013 participant Margaret Berger for Central Norway, for the North Agnete, who represented Norway in Stockholm in 2016, Bjørn Johan Muri from the West and Wig Wam's Åge Sten Nilsen which represented Norway in 2005 for the East. In the end, Ulrikke got the highest number of votes and thus will represent Norway in Rotterdam.

About Ulrikke

Ulrikke Brandstorp (24) from Sarpsborg became well known to the Norwegian people when she came second in the TV show Stjernekamp (NRK) in 2018. Later, she was featured at Addresse: Tel Aviv (a show about Eurovision), charity show Håp i ei gryte and Idrettsgallaen, where she paid tribute to ski athletes Marit Bjørgen and Ole Einar Bjørndalen with an emotional performance.

Ulrikke is known to fans of MGP as she participated in 2017 and made it to the Gold Final with the song Places. Until March 2020, Ulrikke can be seen performing as Liesl in The Sound of Music at Folketeateret in Oslo.

Ulrikke Brandstorp won Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix Stijn Smulders

The song Attention was the pre-contest favourite and was written by former A1 member Christian Ingebrigtsen and Mørland, who represented Norway in 2015 with the song A Monster Like Me alongside Debrah Scarlett.

Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest

Norway made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960. The country has finished last more times than any other, however, they've also won the contest three times. Norway's most recent win was in 2009 when Alexander Rybak lead by a landslide, receiving 387 points with Fairytale. Last year, KEiiNO was crowned the winner of MGP 2019 and Norway's representative in Tel Aviv with the song 'Spirit In The Sky'. They came 6th in the Grand Final.

She has toured in 12 countries over the last 10 years. In 2018, she received the Sámi Music Awards award "Songwriter of the Year".

Eventually, she discovered the Magic Music Maker software and started composing her own songs, which she participated with at the youth talent show UKM.

As a 19-year-old, she moved to Trondheim where she earned a master's degree in European studies. During her time there, she became a part of the local songwriting community. Her first single, Run Run Girl was released on Trondheim Calling's compilation album. Liza has participated in the songwriting camp Song: Expo every single year since 2013. Kevin made it to platinum in 2017, even without being signed by a record label. After that, he signed with Universal Music. In 2019, his popularity exploded in Sweden.

As Finnmark's self-proclaimed party king, he will do everything to make you get those dance moves going. He says he also has a serious message behind his MGP participation. Kevin dislikes the so-called Norwegian “Jantelov” (law of jante), a phenomenon where people tell you that you can’t do what you want to do, or that you’re not good or special enough. With Stem på mæ (Vote for Me), Kevin wants to encourage everyone to follow their dreams no matter how much adversity they encounter, and he wants to tell people to believe in themselves and enjoy successes, whichever way they choose to go.

Oda Loves You - Love Who We Love

Lyrics and Melody: Magnus Bertelsen and Oda Evjen Gjøvåg.

Participant Melodi Grand Prix semi-final 4 Western Norway NRK

If you wandered the streets of downtown Bergen in the mid-1990s, you may have heard the voice of Oda Evjen Gjøvåg (31). She loved to stand on the doorstep of her home to sing and entertain those passing by, hoping to earn an extra penny. This way, she quickly learned that the road to becoming an artist and songwriter would be long. She devoted much of her childhood and teenage years to attend cultural schools, talent competitions, songwriting, dance training and vocal training.

At the age of 19, she moved to the pop metropolis of Los Angeles. She juggled her studied, a job as an Au Pair and vocalist gigs. Over time, she formed a solid base in the big city. She returned to Norway after 7 years and brought back with her a copywriting education and a large amount of lyrics.

Since then, Oda has been writing songs for artists like Marcus and Martinus and Alan Walker, which have been streamed over 120 million times around the world. She has taken the artist name “Oda Loves You”. She says that choice reflects her desire to spread love through music.

Nordic Tenors - In A Special Place

Lyrics and Melody: Einar Kristiansen Five and Jan-Tore Saltnes.

Participant Melodi Grand Prix semi-final 4 Western Norway NRK

Nordic Tenors is a Norwegian vocal group that was established in 2003 in Bergen. The members are Sveinung Hølmebakk (Karmøy), Jan-Tore Saltnes (Holmestrand) and Roald Haarr (Vigrestad, Jæren). The idea behind Nordic Tenors was to create a musical group that combines classical music and opera, with more pop musical expressions and humour.

In 2005, Nordic Tenors premiered with their first full-night performance at the Logen Theatre in Bergen, and the following year they won the award "best newcomer" at Komprisen together with pianist Sjur Hjeltnes. Many will remember Nordic Tenors as singing toastmasters for His Majesty King Harald's 70th birthday as well as their performance at the opening of the new Opera House in Oslo in 2008. In 2010, they were again nominated for an award at Komiprisen, this time for the song Joddlermelodi.

In recent years, the tenor trio has focused more on external musical organizers and also newly written music by composers such as Stefan Nilson and Henning Sommero. Although the humour element is still an important part of the concerts, it no longer takes up as much space as before. In terms of genres, the tenors tend to include opera, musicals, crossovers, vocal pops, 1960s music and yodelling at their concerts.

From 2003 on, the group has performed over 900 concerts and performances at private parties in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the United States. The Christmas concert tour, Christmas with the Nordic Tenors, has become one of the most successful Christmas concert tours in Norway. The Nordic Tenors has released eight albums and one DVD in addition to various singles.

Stay tuned this Saturday to see which one of these artists go through!

Now Alexandru is pursuing a career as a solo artist. Since he was twelve years old, he has interpreted famous songs on YouTube, and several of his videos have 100,000 views.

In addition to singing, Alexandru plays the guitar and the drums. Despite his young age, he has experience from many areas of the music industry. He has already appeared on a large Chinese TV show with millions of viewers.

Alexandru says his Spotify playlists are full of punk and death metal, and to calm down in the evening he prefers to put on one of the albums of the band Bring Me The Horizon. Although Alexandru has learned the technique of "growling", he himself will not create death metal music. Going forward, he wants to show people more of his identity in the rock genre, still with a hint of today's pop sound.

Kristin Husøy - Pray For Me

Lyrics and Music: Neil Hollyn and Kristin Husøy

Participant Melodi Grand Prix semi-final 3 Central Norway NRK

Kristin says she loves soul, jazz and R&B, especially from the second half of the 20th century. She is particularly inspired by musicians such as Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill and Ella Fitzgerald.

When Kristin heard Pray For Me for the first time, she immediately thought it was a great song and absolutely her style, a sort of modern pop music mixed with gospel soul.

Since then, she collaborated with Neil Hollyn on the lyrics and went to the Netherlands for the recording. She says the collaboration has been incredibly inspiring and has given her new experiences and new friends.

SIE GUBBA - Kjære du

Lyrics and music: Petter Øien and Magne Almås

Participant Melodi Grand Prix semi-final 3 Central Norway NRK

The band SIE GUBBA celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2020. They celebrate by going on a nationwide anniversary tour, and not least by being back in Melodi Grand Prix. These country rockers from Central Norway have been among the country's busiest bands for 25 years. With their combination of folk lyrics, fiddle and singalong friendly texts, they have played in almost every town and city across Norway. They have released 12 albums and several singles and held first place on the VG hit list with three different albums. In 2006, the album Sie Gubba became the band's big breakthrough, in part because of the song Sånn e livet which was on the Norwegian hit lists for many weeks.

SIE GUBBA participated in MGP in 2011 where they made it to the final with the song Alt du vil ha.

The band members today are Magne Almås, Tommy Folstadli, Petter Øien, Tore Dalsaune, Morten Hølås and Reidulf Wormdal.

Participant Melodi Grand Prix semi-final 3 Central Norway NRK

Thomas Løseth (33) comes from Fannrem in Orkdal. He won The Voice on TV2 in 2017 and has since been praised for his silky voice and his stage presence. The Norwegian artist Lene Marlin was his mentor during the TV show.

Thomas has dedicated his life to music at a young age. And as he himself puts it: "the hard, long way". He has been a vocalist in several bands, had countless playing jobs, been a studio musician and now works as a solo artist.

He is currently working on his debut album, and several singles are planned to be released this year.

And the one pre-qualified artist performing Saturday:

Akuvi - Som du er

Lyrics and melody: Beatrice Akuvi Kumordzie, Andreas Stone, Costa Leon and Amin Zana

The song will be released on 24 January.

Beatrice Akuvi Hosen Kumordzie (25) is a singer-songwriter artist and entertainer with Norwegian-Ghanaian background. She grew up in Asker outside Oslo in a home filled with music. Sister Anna-Lisa participated in the Melodi Grand Prix in 2019 where she made it to the gold final. The two sisters joined their father on music assignments early on, at events where traditional African music was at the centre.

Akuvi describes her lyrics as pages taken from her diary, which she then adds a melody to. She found her sound on a four-year journey in South Africa, where she attended peace, conflict and religion studies. On her musical journey, she picked up elements from traditional South African gospel, West African afro-pop and American hip hop and R&B. The result is what she calls "reggae-infused neo-soul."

In 2019 Akuvi participated in the TV show Beat for Beat, performed at festivals and released two singles.
