'Festival da Canção' winners NAPA will head to Eurovision for Portugal
09 March 2025 at 01:39 CETAn annual showcase of Portugal's rich music scene, Festival da Canção returned in February for its 2025 edition. 20 songs were selected to be included in the lineup this year, but after two semi-finals we were down to our 12 finalists that would compete for the glass trophy on Saturday 8 March.
Saturday night's result was decided by both a public vote, contributing 50% of the scores, and a jury vote made up of 7 regional juries, and providing the remaining 50% of the points.
The winner of Festival da Canção 2025 is the song Deslocado performed by NAPA, and will represent Portugal at the 69th Eurovision Song Contest in May.
In second place was the song Cotovia by Diana Vilarinho, while Fernando Daniel's Medo landed in third place.
Portugal will perform in the First Half of the First Semi-Final on Tuesday 13 May.
NAPA
The band NAPA used to be known as Men On The Couch! Now, while the name might have changed, the essence and the desire to create new music remains intact.
A basement on the island of Madeira was the starting point for 4 friends to strengthen their relationship through music. The foundations of the band were based on the energy they derived from the Arctic Monkeys and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the melodies of the Beatles and the sensibility of Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim.
In 2019, they recorded their first album Senso Comum, which presented to audiences the band's infectious melodies and raw, melancholic spirit. In 2023, NAPA released their second album, Logo Se Vê; this time showcasing a more mature guise.
2024 was the year when the band embarked upon their first national tour, with dozens of sold-out venues dotted from north to south, and with audiences heading out to see them perform in clubs, theatres and festivals.
Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest
Portugal joined the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 when António Calvário performed his ballad Oração (‘Prayer’) which finished in last place in Copenhagen.
This maritime nation held the record for the most Contest appearances without a victory (over 53 years) until Salvador Sobral lifted the trophy in 2017.
Amar Pelos Dois (‘To Love For The Both of Us’) won in spectacular style, topping both the jury and televote, and scoring a record-breaking 758 points in the process.
When Lisbon hosted the following year, broadcaster RTP went all out on showcasing their seafaring history, from the Contest’s slogan ‘All Aboard!’ to using twelve supplemental marine theme motifs including plankton and seaweed.
