Eesti Laul 2015 brings some changes

18 September 2014 at 12:10 CEST

The Estonian broadcaster (ERR) confirmed that their televised music contest, where the viewers choose the Estonian representative at the Eurovision Song Contest and a competing song (traditionally organised since 2009), will take place a bit earlier this year. However, that is not the only change ERR has announced for the following Eurovision season.

The final of Eesti Laul 2015 will represent a battle of three super-finalists and there will be three potential Eurovision entries competing in that last round. Heidy Purga, the producer of this year’s show, hopes that the new rules will raise the excitement among TV viewers. “The fate of contestants is in viewers hands and it all depends on their votes”, Purga said.

Last year, a record number of songs were submitted for the national selection (188). From year to year, the interest for this competition among Estonian musicians is raising constantly as they are getting aware of its potential. Eesti Laul turned into a great platform for new artists, where they can introduce themselves to the audience in the whole country.

Nevertheless, the ERR’s experience so far is that not only that the winners of Eesti Laul get a lot of attention in Estonia and Europe. Some of the newcomers among the contestants have had a breakthrough in their careers thanks to this music festival. One of the examples is an Estonian metal punk band Winny Puhh (2013) who came third. Still, their appearance at Eesti Laul, brought them to Paris later that year, where they have performed Meiecundimees üks Korsakov läks eile Lätti, upside down at the Rick Owens fashion show.
