Armenia’s siren song: Brunette’s in search of a future lover

Brunette is looking for a special connection, and she tells us all about it in her powerful Eurovision entry, ‘Future Lover.’ The singer from Armenia just has a few small requests - someone to drink smoothies with, visit bookstores with, and who likes her enough to kiss her face. Is that really too much to ask?

This isn’t Brunette’s first rodeo. The singer-songwriter released her debut single at the age of 18 and is a member of girl group En Aghjiknery (ThoseGirlz). With all that fire in her veins, Armenian broadcaster AMPTV decided to choose Brunette as their Eurovision 2023 entry.

When Brunette made a decision to “be good, do good, look good,” she meant it. As the lights came up on her first rehearsal on Monday 1 May, she gave a stirring performance of Future Lover, dressed in white leather. A tilted platform and some trickery of the lights will make for some intriguing visuals for the viewer at home.

The official Eurovision Live Blog was on the ground in the green room during Armenia's first rehearsal, and had this to say: "Brunette has incredible stage presence and a powerful vocal, and this staging makes really clever use of light and graphics during the tempo changes."

Brunette might be able to cope with the nerves of singing to millions of viewers across the world from the Eurovision stage, but she’s certainly no daredevil. When we asked about her favourite funfair ride, she said she’s more likely to be found on a merry-go-round than a rollercoaster. Even Mario Kart might be a bit extreme - she told us she’d prefer to play as a mushroom, those characters that hop around minding their own business and don’t actually have to do any racing.

Brunette is inspired by sultry female voices, and some of her top tunes include Cleo Sol’s I Love You and Doechii’s Stressed - A Colors Show. She’s also a big fan of beautiful songs with attitude — RAYE and 070 Shake’s Escapism is a top track on her playlist.

Talking to the Official Eurovision Song Contest Podcast, Brunette explained how she’s inspired by incredible performers like Rihanna. She said: “The way they perform, it really gives me motivation. I see them moving and enjoying all that performance and it’s exciting, it gives me chills and goosebumps.” She took that level of energy and put it into her music video for Future Lover, which left her feeling pretty exhausted. Liverpool better be prepared for a big performance from this popstar.
