Hungary chooses metal band AWS for Lisbon

Metal band AWS are the winners of 'A Dal 2018', Hungary's national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, and will represent the country in Lisbon with the song 'Viszlát Nyár'. The winner was decided by a combination of jury and public votes.

After three heats and two semi-finals, the final of A Dal 2018 took place in Hungary with AWS emerging victorious. Thirty entries reached the televised stages of the national selection but only eight made it through to the final. In bold you can check the four super-finalists chosen by the expert jury only:

  • Süle Zsolt - Zöld A Május
  • Horváth Tamás - Meggyfa
  • Heincz Gábor BIGA - Good Vibez
  • Dánielfy Gergely - Azt Mondtad
  • AWS - Viszlát Nyár (winners)
  • Király Viktor - Budapest Girl

Televoting then decided the winner, AWS, from the four super-finalists.

About the winner

The Hungarian metal and post-hardcore band AWS was formed in 2006 by Bence Brucker, Dániel Kökényes, Örs Siklósi and Áron Veress. Their music is characterized by diversity, powerful performances, sudden changes, which utilizes metal, psychedelic rock, alternative and post-rock styles. Their music videos often have juxtapositions of images of violence and celebrities in order to bring light to problems that the world faces.

A Dal 2018

A Dal 2018 was hosted by Kriszta Rátonyi and Gábor Alfréd Fehérvári, also known as Freddie, who represented Hungary in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.

The seventh edition of A Dal featured four jury members: 

  • Károly Frenreisz: Kossuth Award winner musician, founder of LGT and Skorpió, eager to discover new compositions by the up-and-coming artists and songwriters
  • Miklós Both: Fonogram and Budai Award winning composer and folk music expert, reprising his role in the jury
  • Judit Schell: Jászai Award winning actress with an Artist Excellency Award, a familiar face for both theatre-goers and movie buffs in Hungary
  • Misi Mező: Guitarist/singer of the band Magna Cum Laude, believes that the unity of voice, music and lyrics is key for a solid performance.  

Hungary in the Eurovision Song Contest

Hungary participated in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 1994, where the country placed fourth with Friderika Bayer's song Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet?  Last year Hungary was represented by Joci Pápai who performed his song Origo, and placed eighth in the Grand Final in Kyiv, Ukraine.

In Lisbon, Hungary participate in the second half of the Second Semi-Final on Thursday 10th May.
