Ann Sophie to represent Germany!

05 March 2015 at 23:22 CET

Eight acts were fighting for the German ticket to Vienna tonight. In three rounds of voting, televoting decided who would have the honour of representing Germany in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest.

As first-placed Andreas Kümmert decided he was not ready to face an international audience in the Eurovision Song Contest, Ann Sophie was declared the winner of Unser Song für Österreich. She will sing Black Smoke in Vienna! You can watch her performance below:

Ann Sophie had only qualified for the German final on February 19, when she received a wildcard after winning the club concert, in which ten young and as of yet unknown artists competed.

Ann Sophie

Ann Sophie (24) was born in London and grew up in Hamburg. At the age of four, she started with ballet dancing, and at 14 she knew that she wanted to be a singer. Six years later she moved to New York to study at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute to become an actress. At the same time she started her music career, singing in bars and recording her first self-written songs. In September 2012 her first album was released, and after three years in the US she moved back to Hamburg. Ann Sophie won the club concert on February 19 and thus received a wildcard for the German final.

To find your path of life is not always that easy. Two rules say that you better be yourself, and follow your heart. I am myself when I am music, and I am my heart when I sing. It would be a great honour to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The First Round

In the first round, the eight qualified acts presented one song each. Then the TV public chose four acts to proceed to the second round. This is the list of entries in order of appearance, with the four qualifiers in bold:

  • Mrs. Greenbird: Shine, Shine, Shine
  • Alexa Feser: Glück
  • Faun: Hörst du die Trommeln
  • Noize Generation: Song For You
  • Ann Sophie: Jump The Gun
  • Fahrenhaidt: Frozen Silence
  • Laing: Zeig Deine Muskeln
  • Andreas Kümmert: Home Is In My Hands

The Second Round

In the second round of voting, the four remaining acts each presented another song:

  • Alexa Feser: Das Gold von morgen
  • Ann Sophie: Black Smoke
  • Laing: Wechselt die Beleuchtung
  • Andreas Kümmert: Heart Of Stone

The Third Round

Out of the remaining eight songs (two per act), the public then picked the two best for the super-final: Ann Sophie with Black Smoke, and Andreas Kümmert with Heart Of Stone.

Then the most shocking moment of the evening happened: Even though Andreas Kümmert won the final vote, he declined to represent his home country in Vienna. He suggested that Ann Sophie should be declared the winner instead.

Thus, the final performance of the evening was Black Smoke by Ann Sophie, who will also sing for Germany in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest.

The Show

Unser Song für Österreich was kicked off by last year's winner Conchita Wurst, singing Rise Like A Phoenix, as well as a short Happy Birthday for show host Barbara Schöneberger.

Janin Reinhardt was adding impressions and interviews from the green room during the broadcast. Three well-known acts performed in the interval: Stephanie Heinzmann, Mark Forster and last year's Eurovision Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst, who presented her new single Unstoppable.
