A family affair in Serbian selection

19 January 2011 at 22:53 CET

Kornelije Kovac is no stranger to Europe's Favourite TV Show, having represented Yugoslavia in the 1974 contest in Brighton as part of the Korni Grupa with the song Moja Generacija which finished in 12th place. The group did in fact share their changing room in 1974 with eventual winners ABBA from Sweden!.

It is an interesting and original approach from RTS with regards to the selection process, as father Kornelije will be in direct competition with his two daughters Aleksandra and Kristina. They will each present a song and singer in a national final to be held on February 26th where the winning singer and song will be chosen. For the Kovac family it presents a no lose situation as it is widely expected that whoever were to be the victorious composer is likely to be fully supported by the other family members as part of the Serbian entourage in Düsseldorf.

Serbia made it's debut as an independent nation in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki and won at the first time of asking when Marija Šerifović was triumphant with the power ballad Molitva.

Serbia will compete in the First Semi Final in Düsseldorf, and will sing in the First half of the show. Their exact starting position will be determined by a draw which take place at the Heads Of Delegation meeting in March.
